Cupcakery!

Boston.com, the online Boston Globe, has a roundup of places with great cupcakes around Boston. Glaringly absent from the list: Finale, which has some excellent cupcakes that are some of the better priced gourmet cupcakes I have seen. Glaringly on the list: Kickass Cupcakes, whose cupcakes were rather too dry the last time I had them.

They ended the roundup with a poll here, and I am croggled that Kickass Cupcakes is coming in at #2.

I voted for Finale by clicking "other".

I hope Kickass Cupcakes has improved their cupcakes, I truly do. However, as they are more expensive than what I can get at Finale - and to me, nowhere near as good - I bring my custom elsewhere.

In related cupcakery, America's Test Kitchen recently did a chocolate cupcake recipe that you can access here if you register (it's free to do so). It looked pretty yummy on the TV screen but I do admit my smellovision is still on the fritz.

Kickass cupcakes either need to be a third larger or a third cheaper. Some of their flavors are better than others, too. At Midnight Madness in Davis a few months ago we got a half-dozen for $12, which was about the right price.

I rather like Sweet cupcakes. Lyndell's cupcakes are tasty, too. Haven't tried any of the other places mentioned in the poll.

I tend to go for chocolate cupcakes, and Kickass tends to be dry and crumbly. Frosting is decent, but I get better cupcakes with cream cheese frosting at Finale for less. Lyndell's... they're decent but don't thrill me like Finale. I haven't been to the other places.

Looks like "Other" is beating KA, but both are behind Sweet.

I have never eaten at Sweet. Clearly I will have to invest in a cupcake.

I think Finale was left out because the article focused specifically on cupcake bakeries, and they do a lot of other desserts, and light dinners... might be misremembering, though.

I had read it as they were including places with great cupcakes whether or not they were just cupcake shops. I gave it a second reading to see if I had misread.

Party Favors (page 3), PetsiPies (page 4), Fiore's (page 9), Lulu's (page 10) and Sugar Bakery (page 11) all have cupcakes on the menu but do more than just cupcakes. As such, I think them skipping Finale is a shame.

I dislike bakery cupcakes. They aren't so much "cup sized cakes" as they are "small cake like substances with an equal or greater amount of sweet toppings". They'd be more precise if they called them "Cup Toppings" and dropped the fake cake.

I have had cupcakes like you describe, yes. I don't know if you've had Finale cupcakes, but I adore those to bits. On my budget I'm still willing to snag one or two anytime I'm in Harvard Square.

Last time I made cupcakes, I used Mom's Sour Cream Chocolate Cake recipe, which has B's vote for best recipe, as it's "chocolate cake that actually tastes like chocolate."

Finale cupcakes are *nothing* like the awful cupcakes you describe.

Coworker J, a Needham native, highly recommends Treats; clearly we should try it out.
