A few weeks back we had a couple of friends over for dinner. ONe of them went to the bathroom and clicked on the lock on the inner doorknob - the lock those of us in the house never use. The lock stuck and we needed to remove the doorknob to get her out.
We had a similar incident last night. The knob has been removed. So, the doorknob is broken.

Last night, before going to bed, I noticed that the freezer door seemed to be a bit ajar. I cursed a little shut the door, and generally checked our The Fridge. Things were not as cool as they could have been. I shut the doors and didn't think more on it. This morning I noticed a lack of noise from The Fridge. Seems like the compressor's busted. I called the appliance store a bit under an hour ago, the repair guy should be here in a few minutes. Good service! My point, though, is that our Fridge is busted.

I am curious if (and dreading if) things will break in threes...

Well, thankfully it was just that someone had twisted the knob to off, and we discovered it before too much food spoiled, and now we know what to check next time. I do wonder which of the many people going in and out of the freezer did that, though... I can't see anyone doing it deliberately, and as Mom pointed out, my niece may be young, but she knows not to touch stuff.

wow, that's pretty bad. any chance someone bumped it accidentally, getting something out of the fridge? I've seen a fridge or two where you could do that, but typically they were older models, not spiffy new ones like you have.

And having a fridge that new fail would have been Majorly Annoying.

Phew! Glad it wasn't anything major.

Perhaps the faulty screen in the kitchen could count as No. 1 of 3?

Or my computer mouse, unless that was too easily repairable by cleaning. :)

Bathroom knob

If it's a knob with a button in the middle of the knob that you push in, then usually the knob on the outside of the bathroom has a hole in the middle. If someone gets locked in the bathroom, take a chicken skewer (or other stiff thin item that will fit through that outside knob hole(!)) and push straight in ... it will push the button out and unlock the door.

If the lock in the middle of the door handle is one of those which you have to rotate (usually has a raised bar across the button bit), then you will need a small screwdriver to fit through the hole on the outside to rotate the button back to unlocked ...

... if the bathroom lock is different from either of the above but has a separate bit that rotates to lock the door, check for a screwdriver slot on the outside of the door to rotate it back to unlocked.

If it's a different kind of lock, or you have no holes/screwdriver bits on the outside of the door, then replace it with one that does. You never know when someone is going to slip in the tub, or pass out at a party (or a child will lock themselves in) and you'll need access.

Even the Kwikset bathroomn locks (as sold by HomeDepot for about 18 bucks) come with an "emergency key" for opening the bathroom door from the outside.

Oh, and speaking of children ... I suggested to [livejournal.com profile] pickledginger the other day, that an LJ journal of [livejournal.com profile] teddybright would be appropriate, and as of right now, it's still available!

The first person to get locked in happens to have a very tool-savvy husband, and he was the one who removed the doorknob and let her out. So I'm pretty sure that was the only way to do it.

The solution we did for Sunday's events was to remove the entire damn thing, put masking tape over the hole, and provide a doorstop.
