Investigate literacy volunteering in your area. (The "why" should be fairly self-explanatory.) Or did you mean a one-time thing?

In this case, a one- or few-times thing. Usually I'm quite busy; boredom is quite rare for me and currently only happens Sundays at work when I'm restricted in what I can do.

I've played too much Freecell and pinball.

For one-shot volunteering locally, there's PMD (People Making a Difference). The times I've volunteered there have been productive and fun.
