The only point I can see in the airline's defense is that not a lot of gentiles are aware of what tefillin are. I didn't know until I'd befriended someone who had previously been an orthodox rabbi.

Yeah but they couldn't like ASK - "Um, what are you doing?" Or watch a moment? I mean people praying generally kind of have a vibe of... people praying.
