With a hat tip to Atrios:
The Obama administration has introduced a new variable to the cost of affordable housing: the cost of transportation from the house to work.

Not a sexy topic, no. But think of this: if you factor in transportation costs and adjust the index from a simple 30% of income to a higher percent covering housing and transportation, the amount of affordable housing in the US drops significantly from the previous estimate of 70% affordable housing.

This is useful.

This does not particularly surprise me.

I have a feeling that this extra metric is not included, only the averaged actual dollar costs.

Do you ride your bike during winter snow as well? I'm curious.
With the kids and requirements for many different kinds of groceries and my lack of suitable bicycle (and really, no bike is suitable for hauling certain Costco loads) I do not get in much time for exercise.

Can tell you for certain as someone who lives in Quincy and has to take the train and then take a bus; it takes me an hour from Quincy to Cambridge each day and more than that when the trains are f8cked up.

Oh, the joys of the MBTA.
Wife and roommate can both regale you with stories of buses that never came. They were quite annoyed when the story got leaked a year or two back that some of the invisible incorporeal buses were by design rather than by traffic.

they've been looking at redefining measures of poverty too, based on a lot more factors than a simple unidimensional income. i have high hopes of obama.

Well, lots of people have. I myself have not, actually, given he is basically a centrist, but I know he is better than the alternative the GOP had to offer. And I do recognize he has done a great deal toward rebuilding US diplomacy, which was and remains sorely and desperately needed.
