A question for my Libertarian friends
Dec. 5th, 2003 11:18 amA lot of Libertarians tell me that ideally most things the government does should be privatized, with the definite exceptions of police, army, courts and (possibly) firefighters and roads. The idea behind this is that private business will do it better and cheaper, quite possibly faster too. Oh, and that public interest either should not be a factor or needs to be particularly compelling.
In the past 20 years or so a lot of things the government had been doing have been privatized. Can any of you name for me up to three items that have been privatized that are being done both better and cheaper than when they were run by the government? I've been racking my brains and having major trouble finding anything aside from maybe the Internet.
Similarly, if you know of any examples where a minimum standard was removed and it resulted in the industry involved improving above where the standard was I'd like to know that too. I can think of a number of instances where standards have been removed or rendered useless but can't think of any where the industry improved by getting rid of the baseline law.
This is a serious request and the answers will involve some serious thinking on my part. And yes, you can post a link to this in other places. I want answers.
