Sonnet for Bill Cosby
Jan. 8th, 2012 12:38 amWhen waking up you should not close your eyes
Before you make a vow to stay awake
And slowly, in the kitchen, show surprise
At little children eating all the cake
So rich and full of chocolate and care
That someone made to celebrate the day.
The plate, once full, lays desolate and bare
With trembling hands, you force yourself to stay.
Do not advance on little children's seats
With aught but kisses ready for each head!
But when they ask you for dessert and sweets
Remind them how they ate your weeks' instead.
If nothing else is any worse today
Your children's laughter will be sweet and gay.
Before you make a vow to stay awake
And slowly, in the kitchen, show surprise
At little children eating all the cake
So rich and full of chocolate and care
That someone made to celebrate the day.
The plate, once full, lays desolate and bare
With trembling hands, you force yourself to stay.
Do not advance on little children's seats
With aught but kisses ready for each head!
But when they ask you for dessert and sweets
Remind them how they ate your weeks' instead.
If nothing else is any worse today
Your children's laughter will be sweet and gay.
