The New Depression
Aug. 16th, 2011 05:11 pmWe've had a number of economic depressions in the US. Most people have not read about the depressions we had in the 1800s, but we had 'em. Still, everybody who studies the economic history of the US knows about The Great Depression (dun dun dunnn).
Here's the thing about the Great Depression: as a result of the prolonged economic downturn, many different programs and initiatives were tried, some successfully, some not. A number of them are still around today: Social Security, TVA, NLRB, FHA and more. Many of them were instituted prior to 1937. In 1937, FDR decided to listen to the GOP, who had been agitating for higher taxes (yes, higher) and slashing the public sector. He did this. The Great Depression probably would have ended years earlier if he hadn't. ( Cut for length. )
The GOP is fighting hard to say our government doesn't work and to prove it when they run it. They are succeeding.
