Recently we have had multiple discussions at the national level about how to deal with government debt. This is not the conversation we should be having, because the conversation we should be having is how to get millions of Americans back to work and for the poorest to be able to manage their bills and for everybody to not face bankruptcy from exorbitant health insurance and health care costs. But no, the conversation we're having is about raising the debt ceiling and dealing with deficits. Long, but possibly cogent and concise. )

I have in the past been concerned about government spending, especially on items I do not like, but I have accepted that I do not run things. Never before have I been worried that one of our two political parties is willing to bankrupt the US and drive us into a wholly manufactured Depression. However, that is exactly what I am worried about right now on the national level. And, big hint: it isn't the Democratic Party. They might be milquetoast and they may have some spending programs, but you know what? Government is supposed to spend money on things you and I may want but can't afford - like roads, clean water, clean air, a justice system.

Anybody who says they want the US to be less socialist should tell me when they want to end Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public libraries, public parks, public police and fire protection, food stamps, grants to poor college students, scientific grants, the space program, and, oh yes, public sewers and municipal water and paved roads. Oh, and in Alaska, the yearly money grant that all Alaska citizens get. If somebody tells you they want the US to be less socialist, ask them which of those programs they don't like.
