Sep. 28th, 2009 05:17 pmDespite a few personal details I am keeping this public just so some other people can comment.
Its been a rollercoaster six weeks. I've been in rehearsals for Never After, a musical comedy locally written and produced, and we had all of six weeks to prepare to go on stage. We were at least given the freedom to use our books, which is admittedly one of the reasons I was willing to try out for the play in the first place as my memory has been giving swiss cheese a run for its money in terms of holes.
We had two shows in total for the run, both this past weekend at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville MA. I was actually pretty sure we'd give a good performance. Rehearsals have been fairly often. I have had to fit them, sometimes unsuccessfully, around children, illness, and ill children. Regardless, people seemed to be doing quite well.
I was pretty sure the audience on Saturday night was receptive when they cheered the opening announcement regarding turning off cellphones and what to do in case of peasant unrest or dragons run amok.
We had more people at the Saturday night show than the Sunday matinee, but the numbers weren't all that different. All told, we gave two solid performances and got laughs and cheers at the right spots. My wife was quite happy to see how well I stage-flirted with other men - being a Very Merry Man it was called for. I think she kept from fanning herself in front of my parents ;-)
I haven't been in a musical since high school. I believe, based on this, I am willing to do another one - when the kids are a little older and potty trained, I think.
My thanks to everyone who worked on the production for making a newcomer feel welcome. I still don't know many of you very well but you are good people. Have a good rest, and hopefully see you next month for the big broadcast.
