I never did meet the man. Even so, he has always been a fact of my life: one of my two senators and a man I have been proud to vote for. His family has money and power and very high status, yet he kept championing the rights of those who had far less than he.
He didn't always get things right, but he always tried hard to do so and usually succeeded. He also did constituent service to an extent rarely seen in modern US politics, and almost unheard-of levels in the US Senate. For that he will be decidedly missed by the residents of the Commonwealth.
I wish the best to his family and friends, and hope that we the voters here in Massachusetts can find his like again.
