Nov. 15th, 2004 12:18 pmA few entries this week...
Ghost in the Shell, the series, is one of the more episodic pieces of anime I have watched. General gist: a team of last-ditch police called in when nobody else will do, a team of final resort. The plot seems OK, the characterizations are good, but what really sells this series is the artwork, which is incredibly well-drawn/rendered and blends conputer-generated and cel animation nearly seamlessly. If you like lots of big bangs then this series will not disappoint. My only heads-up is for parents worried about bodies in skintight clothes - they draw people's buttocks quite well. Cartoon Network
Full Metal Alchemist is the tale of two young boys who lost their mother. She died. They tried to bring her back to life using the power of alchemy (magic), failing to do so and getting themselves into a fair bit of trouble. One has become an animated metal suit; the other now has a metal arm and a metal leg. They both want to return to normal and if possible try again to bring their mom back to life. This one is serial and I'm liking the plotlines. Also, episodes are clearly marked at the beginning so you can see which number it is. Cartoon Network
60 Minutes this week had three hard-hitting pieces and an amusing Andy Rooney rant. One of the pieces put Yasser Arafat in historical perspective through 60 Minutes interviews with him, which was useful. I'd never heard the man's voice before. CBS
Getbackers is a fun little anime series, closer to serial, detailing the trials and tribulations of the Getbackers Recovery Service. Ban (pronounced Bohn) and Ginji (with a hard G) boast of a 100% recovery rate and excellent service. They have special powers that aid in their work and an agent, of the job-finding variety, named Heaven who puts Playboy models to shame fully dressed. Pity they have no luck or skill with money at all... Anime Network
