Just to keep California politics in proper perspective

Back in 1998, California voted in Gray Davis, a Democrat, as governor. He has had to preside over a major energy crisis - something engineered by Republican campaign donors through high-ranking Republicans - and a budget shortfall - engineered largely by high-ranking Republicans. A wealthy Republican paid for a signature drive to attempt to recall Mr Davis from the governorship. That worthy has gotten enough signatures to require a recall vote. He is also intending on running for the office, hoping Mr Davis will get the boot.

In short, the Republicans put together major crises while Democrats were in power and are using the crises as a reason to oust the Democrats.

Just so I have that straight.
