Most. Annoying. Lunchbreak. Ever

In my top five anyways.

Anybody who's ever eaten with me at a restaurant or in my home more than twice knows that I can be a very picky eater. I am very clear about my likes and dislikes, however, and am polite about it, which is actually easier for a restaurant - this way they know what will work right and means I will bring them my business again.

I called the nearby sausage-and-other-meats place a bit before my lunch break so I could have a full lunch. I was very hungry and ready to wolf down what I ordered. I asked for a hamburger plate, which comes with fries - dry roll, ketchup, mustard and pickles for the burger. This place makes very good burgers and their prices are very good. Good economy lunch.

I got there. I picked up my clamshell with my meal. I paid, I drove back to work - and found out that somebody had put cheese on my hamburger. Anybody who's ever even chatted food with me knows Vulfie Don Eat Dat. Feh.

I picked up the clamshell, put it in the bag, drove back to the place (it's down the street, so it's doable) and asked for my money back. I explained that I don't eat cheeseburgers, can't eat 'em, and that my lunch break was almost over. The lady behind the counter asked if I was interested in any of the other ready foods they had and I told her I no - I didn't want the meatloaf and the other things all combined meat and milk, not that I mentioned the whole process aloud. Oddly enough this very simple problem with no real solution had tears prickling at my eyes just a little bit. Might have been the hunger adding to it. At least I'm in touch with my feelings, hey?

Well, she gave me the refund and told me to come back tomorrow, she'd make sure it's on them. I don't think I kept the disappointment out of my voice.

I may or may not go back tomorrow. I do know the place means well.

I came back to work and got a bag of chips. I'm still extremely hungry. Tomorrow I might feel better about going back there. Right now I'm still annoyed. And hungry. *soft sigh*

Gahhhh! Weren't you just telling a story the other day about a different place that did that?

I hope Pseydtonne can pick up something for you. Wish I could send you food.

I can't pick up anything. I got a ride to work. I have no cash on me, I'm just above broke until Friday, and I'm hungry as heckydarn.

ah missing link clued in. No meat and milk, not kosher. I feel your pain.

[identity profile] iamjw.livejournal.com 2003-12-09 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's unfortunate they didn't think to make a new meal for you and have someone deliver it - but a free meal tomorrow is something at least. I hope the tummy managed to get something into it.

[identity profile] teddywolf.livejournal.com 2003-12-10 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
They only have delivery through 2pm, which is before my lunch starts.

It might be worth it, depending on how clued-in your local eateries are, to mention "I keep kosher". It works where I am, I don't know if it works where you are.

[identity profile] teddywolf.livejournal.com 2003-12-10 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly enough it doesn't work well out here despite a relatively strong Jewish presence. A few places have understood but most people don't seem to know what kosher means aside from 'that eating thing for Jews' (paraphrased). Kind of a pain really.

*ponder* I wonder what a culture column in a newspaper would be like - one which describes a little about cultures both in and out of the US.

That is a pain. Hrm.

I think it was probably an honest mistake, and perhaps (if they usually charge extra for cheese) someone might even have thought they were doing you a favour ...

... the woman did sound suitably apologetic and they've offered you a free meal to make up for it (I'm assuming they don't usually do delivery, and that you couldn't have phoned them before you headed back so they could have had a suitable replacement ready waiting for your arrival)

It's unfortunate, but I think you should allow them one mistake and a chance to make up for it, it's what I'd hope someone would do for me and it's what I try to do for others ... but that's just my thoughts and you are perfectly entitled to your anger and pain and to do whatever you think right.

best wishes and virtual hugs ...

Oh, I know it was an honest enough mistake. And the place did try everything they could to rectify it, but there just wasn't enough time - and that there was the biggest problem.

I really miss having an hour for lunch break.
